Joseph Grado, a watchmaker who'd worked at Tiffany, started making phono cartridges on his kitchen table in Brooklyn in 1953, and he's credited with inventing the stereo moving-coil cartridge. His nephew John Grado, who started out sweeping floors in 1965, bought the company in 1990 and took it into headphones, first with the HP series around 1990 and then the SR60 in 1994. Grado is still family-run, still assembles its headphones by hand in its Brooklyn building and hasn't advertised for decades. Its pads, end caps and other small parts are still sold, but its warranty doesn't cover headphones bought on marketplaces or auction sites, so a used Grado is your responsibility.
