Brand
Naotake Hayashi founded the company in Tokyo in 1938 as Showa Koon Kogyo, a recording business, and the Stax name first appeared on a condenser microphone in 1950. Its first electrostatic headphone, the SR-1, came in 1960, and Stax went on to make tonearms, cartridges, amps and electrostatic speakers as well. The original company stopped trading in November 1995, and about ten former employees founded STAX Ltd. in January 1996. It joined the Edifier group in 2011. For a used buyer two facts matter most. Vintage Stax come in Normal bias with a 6-pin plug or Pro bias with a 5-pin plug, and Stax Japan has ended repairs on the classic models, with no drivers, pads or cables available.
