Grado · Open-back · Mid-1990s–2008 (gold SR325i from 2003)
The SR325 was Grado's first headphone with metal cups, and it arrived in the mid-1990s at the top of the original five-model Prestige series. The first ones had black anodized aluminum cups, then silver. The famous gold pair came later. In 2003 Grado released the improved SR325i in gold to mark the company's 50th year, and in 2009 Grado had to tell buyers that the next SR325i was silver again. That's why this page covers both. Tell them apart by the cups. The originals are straight-sided, and the gold SR325i has the newer two-edged shape. Watch for the Alessandro MS2 too, a Grado-made aluminum lookalike without Grado's model button.
Before you plug in
The wired-in cable breaks at the plug or the Y-split, and twisting cups make it worse. Pads wear out. Listings often call any SR325 gold, and the Grado-made Alessandro MS2 looks very similar.
New to used headphones? How to check a used pair covers pads, cables, channel dropouts and fakes, and impedance and your amp explains what will drive it.
Buying guide
We'd buy the silver SR325 titled in good condition at $258 delivered from a 100% seller. There are at least 5 for sale, and the four silver pairs ask $257–282 delivered, in line with the $250–290 band. Black or silver straight-sided cups mark the original SR325, and gold two-edged cups mark the 2003 SR325i Gold, which asks $352 here plus $130 shipping from Canada. Look for Grado's round model button on each cup, since an aluminum pair without it is likely the Grado-made Alessandro MS2. At 32 ohms it plays loud from a phone, so the checks are the cable, which breaks at the plug or the Y-split, and the pads, which Grado still sells.
