Grado · Open-back · c.1994–2008
Grado calls the SR80 the most recognized headphone in its history and the best-selling model it has ever made. It arrived around 1994 in the first Prestige lineup, one step above the SR60, and won a 1995 Golden Note award for its design. Reviewer Daniel Kumin pointed out that its cups hang from a spring band almost exactly the way WWII aircraft headsets did, and Play Magazine picked it as the best all-rounder of the SR60, SR80 and SR125. The original ran until the SR80i of 2008. Like every Grado of the time it has a wired-in Y-cable and small foam pads, and both are the parts to check.
Before you plug in
The cable breaks at the plug or the Y-split, and the spinning cups twist it. Pads fall off, and one long-term owner reports the plastic part that holds the headband breaking.
New to used headphones? How to check a used pair covers pads, cables, channel dropouts and fakes, and impedance and your amp explains what will drive it.
Buying guide
We'd buy the SR80 titled nice and working at $100 delivered from a 100% seller, the cheapest from an established account. Only 4 are for sale, at $98–132 delivered, so the $95–120 band isn't a market read. Check the cups in the photos, since the original has straight-sided cups and the SR80i and later have larger, tapered ones. At 32 ohms it plays well from a phone, and Grado still sells genuine pads, so look harder at the cable, which breaks at the plug or the Y-split, and at the plastic headband holders, which can crack. Skip the $98 pair from a zero-feedback seller whose photo shows blue cups.
