Koss launched the Porta Pro in 1984, and it's still in the catalog more than 40 years later. It folds up small, sits lightly on the ear and has small temple pads on the headband, and Koss calls it one of the most popular headphones around the world. In 2024 Koss marked its 40th birthday with a wireless version and a retro billboard near its Milwaukee headquarters. For a used buyer the long run cuts both ways. Pads are easy to get and it plays well from any phone. But a listing can be anything from a 1980s original to a recent limited edition, a wireless one or the Utility with its detachable cord, so ask which one you're looking at.
Before you plug in
The wired-in cord and the foam pads are the parts that wear. With so many editions, the main trap is getting a different version from the one you expected.
New to used headphones? How to check a used pair covers pads, cables, channel dropouts and fakes, and impedance and your amp explains what will drive it.
Buying guide
We'd buy the Porta Pro Classic titled new in box at $61 delivered, about $10 more than most used pairs here. There are at least 27 for sale and most ask $50–85 delivered, with used pairs at $40–52 and new Classics and colorways setting the top. It's 60 ohms and plays from any phone. Koss sells genuine replacement pad sets, so worn foam is no problem, but the cord is wired into both cups, so ask for a note that both sides play with it flexed near each cup and the plug. Koss's lifetime warranty is written for the original purchaser only, so treat a used pair as uncovered, and skip the listing whose photo shows a boxed case and a USB cable instead of a wired Porta Pro.

The lowest delivered Porta Pro at $40 with free shipping, titled vintage, from a 99% seller. It isn't titled tested and the pads look orange in the photo, so ask whether they're replacements and for a note that both sides play.
