Beyerdynamic · Open-back · 1985–today
Beyerdynamic launched its studio pair, the DT 770 PRO and DT 990 PRO, in 1985, and the company says both still turn up in studios all over the world. The DT 990 grew out of the DT 880, with a diaphragm about 40 percent lighter and a fully open back. It came out first in 600 ohms and later in 250. The PRO version added a spring-steel headband and a single coiled cable for studios where headphones go on and off all day, and the German magazine stereoplay rated it top class in 1989. Because it never left production, a used one can come from any decade, and Beyerdynamic still sells drivers, pads and headband pads that fit the old ones.
Before you plug in
No single fault is well documented, and parts are easy to get. The trap is that a 1980s DT 990 and a recent PRO look alike, so check the impedance before you plan your amp.
New to used headphones? How to check a used pair covers pads, cables, channel dropouts and fakes, and impedance and your amp explains what will drive it.
Buying guide
We'd buy the 250-ohm DT 990 PRO at $108 delivered from mard-295, a 100% seller whose photo shows the coiled cable and velour pads. There are at least 82 for sale and used 250-ohm PROs mostly ask $110–160 delivered, while Alto Music lists one with a stock photo at $190. At 250 or 600 ohms it needs a headphone amp or a good audio interface, and only the 80-ohm PRO is easy to run from a laptop. A 1980s DT 990 and a recent PRO look alike and titles almost never say which, so ask for a photo of the impedance label before you plan your amp. Beyerdynamic still sells EDT 990 V velour pads, so tired pads are an easy swap, but the cable is wired in, so ask for a note that both sides play with it flexed where it enters the cup.
