AKG's K 240 Monitor took over from the Sextett in 1984 and stayed in the range for 20 years, still listed in AKG's 2003 catalog alongside the new K 240 Studio. It keeps the Sextett's look and self-adjusting headband, but where the Sextett had six passive radiators around each driver, the Monitor's baffle has cloth-covered openings, according to a collector's teardown. It's a 600-ohm, semi-open around-ear design made in Austria, and its gold headband sets it apart from the Sextett. Germany's stereoplay tested it in April 1984. The diffuse-field DF Studio Monitor followed, and the later 55-ohm K 240 Studio is a different headphone with a detachable cable, so check the label.
Before you plug in
The cloth on the baffle under the pads has usually rotted in old pairs, and the headband elastics go slack with age.
New to used headphones? How to check a used pair covers pads, cables, channel dropouts and fakes, and impedance and your amp explains what will drive it.
Buying guide
We'd buy the black-and-gold Monitor titled tested at $79 delivered, whose photo shows its cable and a 6.3 mm adapter, or the one titled tested at $62 once the seller shows you the cup label. There are at least 13 for sale, and the $80–210 band is wide because it mixes 600-ohm Monitors, asking $55–189 delivered here, with diffuse-field K 240 DF Studio Monitors at $195 and $209. It's 600 ohms at 88 dB, so it needs a headphone amp, and a phone will sound quiet. Check the label, since the later 55-ohm K 240 Studio is a different headphone with a detachable cable, and ask for a photo with a pad lifted, because the cloth on the baffle has usually rotted in old pairs. Skip the DF listed with $2,900 shipping, which shares its title with another seller's listing.

The lowest delivered Monitor here at $55, titled 600 ohms with a 3.5 mm jack, and the photo shows the gold ring. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a short video of both sides playing with the cable moved where it leaves the cup.
