The K 240 Sextett is named for the six small passive membranes around each driver, which AKG said combined the advantages of open and closed headphones. AKG's 1981 brochure called it a milestone of its research into spatial hearing, promising the illusion of being in the concert hall. It's usually dated to 1975, it was on sale by 1981, it was made in Austria, and the K 240 Monitor replaced it in 1984. Collectors split it into early, middle and late production runs, EP, MP and LP, told apart by the baffle and dust screen under the pads rather than anything you'll see in a listing. One badge confuses sellers. It reads FOR OUTPUTS 4–600 Ohms, the range of amps it works with, not its impedance.

AKG said it can be connected to all headphone outputs, which is what the FOR OUTPUTS 4–600 Ohms badge means. Its own impedance and sensitivity aren't documented, so a hi-fi headphone jack or a headphone amp is the safe bet.
Pads
Around-ear cushions with leatherette-look covers in AKG's photos. The foam and dust screens inside the cups break down with age and often need redoing.
Cable
Wired in, leaving the left cup. It isn't a detachable mini-XLR, which only arrived with the much later K 240 Studio.
What to check
The elastic straps of the self-adjusting headband go slack, and the foam and dust screens inside the cups break down. The grilles can crack if they're pried off for cleaning.
01Sextett or not: Look for silver rings on the cups in the photos. Among K 240s only the Sextett has them, so plain cups mean a Monitor, DF or later model.
02Headband: Look at the elastic straps under the headband arch. They should pull the band down snugly, and slack ones need replacing.
03Both sides: Ask the seller to confirm both sides play at the same volume. Sound should stay on when the cable is moved where it leaves the cup.
04Screens: Ask for a photo with one pad lifted if the seller is willing. Intact foam and screens are good, and crumbled ones need redoing.
05Grilles: Check the outer grilles for cracks. They can break when pried off, so ask whether they've been removed.
06Production run: Don't pay extra for an EP, MP or LP claim in the title. Collectors say you need to see the baffle under the pad to tell.
We'd buy the Sextett titled tested at $252 delivered from a 99.4% seller, right in the $240–260 band, and its photo shows the silver cup rings and the cable's 6.3 mm plug. Only three of the at least 6 for sale carry no warning, so that band isn't a market read, and of the rest, two share one title across different sellers and one doesn't show its seller, so check feedback and history before buying those. The German auction at $179 delivered with no bids is the cheapest way in, and we'd stop around $200 delivered, since it isn't titled tested. AKG's FOR OUTPUTS 4–600 Ohms badge gives the range of amps it suits, and its own impedance isn't documented, so plan on a hi-fi headphone jack or a headphone amp. Look for the silver cup rings in the photos, since plain cups mean a Monitor or a later K 240, check that the elastic straps under the headband still pull it down snugly, and don't pay extra for an EP, MP or LP claim, which collectors say takes a look under the pads to confirm.
