The K 140 S is a small, light AKG made from 1980 to 1982, a semi-open headphone that sits on the ear and weighs 190 grams. AKG's data sheet promised excellent sound in the lowest to middle frequencies and treble reproduced neutrally without unnatural sharpness. It used the same self-adjusting strap headband idea as the K 240, and it was sold with either a DIN plug or a jack. Collectors say the K 140 and K 141 use the same drivers as the K 240s. Its close relative, the K 141 of 1979 to 1989, is the one sellers most often mix it up with, so check the label. It was a short-lived model, and the data sheet is most of what survives.
K 140 S (1980–1982)K 141 (1979–1989, a close relative)
600 ohms at 96 dB, so a hi-fi receiver's headphone jack or a headphone amp suits it. A DIN-plug version needs an adapter.
Pads
On-ear cushions. Their material and any replacements aren't documented, so check them closely in the photos.
Cable
Wired in on one side, sold with either a DIN plug or a jack.
What to check
No fault is well documented. On any AKG with this strap headband the elastics go slack with age, and the wired-in cable and old cushions are the other parts to check.
01Model: Ask for a photo of the label. A K 141 is a close relative, so make sure you know which one you're getting.
02Plug: Look at the plug in the photos. A DIN plug needs an adapter for a modern jack.
03Both sides: Ask the seller to confirm both sides play at the same volume. Sound should stay on when the cable is moved near the cup.
04Headband: Check the strap under the headband. It should pull the band down snugly.
05Cushions: Look closely at the cushions in the photos. They should be soft and whole, since replacements aren't documented.
We'd buy the US pair titled Made in Austria at $67 delivered from a 99.9% seller, the cheapest K 140 here without a warning. Only five are for sale, so the $65–180 band isn't a market read, and the two asking $179 and $189 delivered, one with custom leather pads and one from Italy, are close to double the $96 median. It's 600 ohms at 96 dB, so a hi-fi receiver's headphone jack or a headphone amp suits it, and a DIN-plug version needs an adapter, so look at the plug in the photos. Ask for a photo of the label, since sellers mix it up with the K 141, and check that the strap under the headband still pulls the band down snugly. Two listings share the same title from different accounts, so compare their photos and seller history before buying either.
