Sennheiser · Open-back · 1996–2001
The HD 565 Ovation sat at the top of Sennheiser's HD 56x line from 1996 to 2001, with only the HD 580 above it. It's a 160-ohm open headphone with velour pads, and the measurement site DIY-Audio-Heaven found it not that different from the HD 580 and HD 600 apart from bass extension and comfort. The HD 545 Reference was the same headphone in different clothes. You'll sometimes see it listed as the Ovation II, but that name belongs to the HD 560. Current HD 600-family pads fit it, so a pair with ruined foam is an easy fix.
Before you plug in
Intermittent contact at the two-pin cup connectors is the known fault. The original pad foam breaks down into a sticky mess.
New to used headphones? How to check a used pair covers pads, cables, channel dropouts and fakes, and impedance and your amp explains what will drive it.
Buying guide
We'd buy the HD 545 Reference titled tested at $49 delivered, which is the HD 565 Ovation in different looks, and budget for new pads, since its photo shows worn ones. Only four are for sale, three of them HD 545s, so the $75–120 band isn't a market read. At 160 ohms it's the easiest of these Sennheisers to drive, and a decent phone or laptop gets it loud enough, though a headphone amp helps. The original pad foam turns sticky with age, but current HD 600-family pads fit, and the known fault is the two-pin cup connectors, so ask for a video with the cable moved at each cup. The only HD 565 is titled rebuilt from miscellaneous parts at $136 delivered, so ask which parts are original.
