The DT 48 is where Beyerdynamic's headphone story starts. Eugen Beyer's company launched it in Berlin in 1937, and Beyerdynamic calls it the first dynamic headphone. DT stands for Dynamic Telephone. It stayed in the catalog for 75 years, until the end of 2012, serving broadcasters, reporters, test labs and hearing clinics. The 1967 catalog sells it for measurement, monitoring, hearing tests and demanding hi-fi listeners all at once. The DT 48 A hearing-test version came with matched drivers, a measurement report and red and blue covers for the two sides. The last version, the 25-ohm DT 48 E, was a closed monitor for reporters and camera crews. At around 400 grams it's a heavy thing to wear, so buy one as a piece of history first.

The low-impedance versions need only a fraction of a volt, so almost anything drives them. The 200-ohm version of the 1970s wants a little more voltage but is still an easy load.
Pads
Around-ear cups on the standard model and flat rubber cushions on the DT 48 A hearing-test version. Beyerdynamic no longer lists any DT 48 parts, so worn cushions have to be found secondhand.
Cable
Wired in, not detachable. Depending on the version it ended in bare wires, loudspeaker plugs, a mono or stereo 6.3 mm jack or a DIN plug, so check the end before you buy.
What to check
The cable is wired in and the plugs vary, so many pairs need a new plug or an adapter. Beyerdynamic no longer supplies parts, so worn cushions have to be sourced secondhand.
01Version: Ask for a photo of the label and which impedance it is. A DT 48 E is 25 ohms, while 1970s pairs are usually 200 ohms.
02Both sides: Ask the seller to confirm both sides play at the same volume. Sound should stay on when the cable is moved where it enters each cup.
03Plug: Look at the end of the cable in the photos. Bare wires or a DIN or speaker plug mean you'll need a new plug or an adapter.
04Cushions: Check the cushions for cracks and hardening. They should still seal around the ear, since parts are no longer made.
05Headband: Look at the headband and cup mounts for cracks or bends. Both cups should sit firmly and swivel.
We'd buy the 25-ohm DT 48 titled new old stock at $275 delivered with a 1/4-inch plug, the only pair here that isn't untested or flagged. Only five are listed, so the $200–280 band isn't a market read. Almost anything drives one, a phone included, but the impedance changed over the run (5 or 25 ohms in the 1960s, 200 in the 1970s, 25 on the last DT 48 E), so ask for the label. The cable is wired in and the plug varies from bare wires to DIN, and Beyerdynamic no longer sells cushions, so check both in the photos and ask for a note that both sides play at the same volume. Skip the title "beyer dt48s beyerdynamic 25ohms", which two accounts list at $206 and $1,014 delivered, and the $138 pair from a 97.7% seller whose cups look bare in the photo.
